National Schools Regatta (Nat Schools) is a key highlight of the rowing year for any school in the country, alongside Henley Royal Regatta and the Junior British Rowing Championships. After World War II there was a lack of competitive rowing for schools. Desmond Hill Master of rowing at St Edwards School, Oxford invited neighbouring schools to take their 3rd VIIIs to race, and so in 1947 Nat Schools was born. 70 years later the race is stronger than ever. It was held at Nottingham until 2016 when it moved to Eton Dorney. Because of the sheer number of crews entered for the event, it takes place over three consecutive days.
J14 parents coming for the first time may be astonished at the sheer numbers of rowers, boats, coaches and supporters. The 67 school marquees are placed along one side of the 2km lake, and these act as the bases and meeting points for the rowers, coaches and supporters for each club.
Taking place 26th – 28th May 2023 – further details on preparation and arrangements to attend, will be shared closer to the time. Till then feel free to visit the official NSR site.
Family members are actively encouraged to shout and cheer for our teams as they battle it out. However, a plea from the heart, please refrain from calling such stirring words as “keep going/keep rowing”; take it from the rowers, nobody is going to stop rowing at the 1500m mark. Many thanks – the 1863 Supporters Group.
